Heart-stopper for Apaches First XI against Coogee Bay Rebels

Round 5: 17 November 2018 vs Coogee Bay Rebels at Moore Park 5

It was a see-sawing affair at Moore Park 5 that saw both sides rue opportunities lost.

Apaches First XI skipper Isaac lost the toss and the Apaches were put into the field. Seymour found success immediately, with steep bounce catching glove on the way through to the keeper.

The Rebels remained subdued well into their innings, and despite only losing one more wicket prior to drinks, only managed to put 42 runs on the board in the session. The wicket to fall went to Yap, after a stifling period of 4 overs in which the Rebels had managed a solitary run.

Following the break, the Rebels continued at a steady pace. The introduction of honorary Apache Paul Moorehouse just prior to drinks yielded a wicket shortly after. Stu Branch took the catch from a frustrated batsman during a miserly spell of spin bowling.

As the Rebels began to up the ante, a few missed opportunities crept in to the Apaches’ game (though one of the dropped catches did yield a run-out, much to bowler Will Sammuri’s frustration).

The Rebels unleashed late in the innings, taking the score from 81 after the 33rd over to 145 by the end of the innings. Milligan, Seymour and Foley all took wickets, but it did not stem the lower order hitting. Nevertheless, 145 looked under-done in the conditions.

This was underlined in the first 2 overs of the Apaches innings, in which Watto alone took 17 runs off the deficit. However, Stu was unfortunately trapped in front in the 3rd over.

VB and Watto added a further 20 to the score before both were dismissed in the 8th over.

This left Isaac and Sammuri to re-build the innings, combining some solid defence with powerful shots. However, once both were dismissed, the score looked precarious at 6/87. The weather was ominous, and both sides scrambled to learn how to apply the Duckworth-Lewis rules.

Some smart batting between Foley and Milligan took the score past 100. Following Foley’s dismissal for 14, Milligan anchored the chase with Seymour (14) contributing from the other end.

The cold November rains did come, but while they were enough to evoke Guns n’ Roses, they were never quite enough to halt play.

While the Apaches had plenty of overs in reserve, wickets-in-hand were a problem. At 8/131, the game remained in the balance.

Yap came to the crease and struck some confidence-building blows to narrow the deficit. The scores finally reached parity at the start of the 38th over, but a harrowing period ensued. Milligan, who had struck the runs to level the scores, was unable to score from the remaining 5 deliveries.

Yap faced the first 3 deliveries of the following over, again unable to score. From the 4th, Yap took the initiative and looked to glide through the vacant cordon region; but was unable to get it past the keeper, who caught the ball high to his right.

Fromm was struck high on the pads with his first ball. He swung at the next – and missed – only to see middle stump cartwheeling dramatically.

Milligan remained not out for a personal best 17* – well done.

The Rebels managed a remarkable late comeback to secure the tie, although both teams were inevitably left to wonder what might have been.

Apaches First XI in comfortable win over Souths Juniors

Round 4: 10 November 2018 vs South Sydney Juniors at Rowland 1

The Apaches First XI posted a comfortable victory in the one-day clash against Souths Juniors.

Souths were sent in to bat and Foley struck in his third over, bowling the charging opener. Sammuri got his break through shortly after, sending a caught behind to Watto.

The next batting partnership was able to build, and some big shots took the score past 50. However, Stu Branch took a brilliant catch diving forward to give debutant Blake Milligan his first Apaches wicket.

The scoring then dried up, with the next wicket falling to Brad Koch in the following over, and Souths went to the drinks break at 4/77 .

The break didn’t help Souths, with Isaac taking a wicket caught behind from the first ball after drinks. Yap chimed in with 2 wickets as the score moved along sluggishly.

Souths were able to muster some more heavy hitting gave the score some respectability. But it was never up to par, with Foley returning to take 2 wickets. Sammuri dismissed the Souths opener to end the innings on 152 in the 38th over.

Stu and Ben Harrison made an all-Kiwi opening combination, and despite a slow start managed a 48 run opening stand before Ben was dismissed for 23. VB was next in and the pair kept the score moving along to 1/86 at drinks.

Some extremely slow bowling from the Souths spinner claimed Stu stumped on 42, commencing something of an Apaches tradition. Watto then posted a rare failure, skying a leading edge from the same bowler without troubling the scorers. The spinner also had Joe Cleaves stumped early, and should have had VB stumped, but for the keeper appealing an unlikely caught behind instead.

VB brought up his half century from the next delivery, and joined by Isaac, they comfortably overhauled the Souths total in the 36th over.

The 6 wicket victory was never seriously in doubt. A strong bowling and fielding performance restricted Souths to a below-par score, which was chased down with plenty of batting in reserve.

1st inns. – Apaches won toss and elected to bowl
Pat Foley – 3 /13 from 7 overs
Al Yap – 2/29 from 8 overs

2nd inns.
David Venn-Brown – 56*
Stu Branch – 42

Cliffhanger defeat for Apaches First XI

Round 3: 3 November 18 vs Botany United at Booralee 3

The Apaches First XI went down narrowly to Botany United in Saturday’s one day match.

Stand-in skipper Sujee Mampitiyarachchi won the toss and batted first in hot conditions. Watto and Bryan opened the Apaches batting and got the innings off to a steady start. With their eye in, the scoring rate accelerated after the first 5 overs, taking the score past 50.

Bryan was bowled for 17, ending a 75 run opening partnership. Watto went past 50 shortly after, and then set about building a partnership with Ben Harrison. Botany had quickly resorted to setting very defensive, straight fields. As a result, many fours were cut down to singles.

Watto and Ben continued to look strong after the drinks break, until Botany’s spinner held on to a well-hit return chance from Watto. VB got off the mark with a boundary from his first delivery, and helped keep the score moving along.

Ben hit some fine shots, however he was caught in the deep for 25. Joe Cleaves was unfortunate to be dismissed shortly after, having skied a leading edge. VB then completed a trio of quick dismissals, with a soft catch to mid-wicket for 27.

Mark Horvath and Brad Koch then came together to put on a 41 run partnership to close out the innings, combining some big hitting with aggressive running. Mark finished on 32* and Brad 18*.

Bryan Seymour and Brad Koch kept Botany to a subdued start, with the Apaches conceding at just 2 an over from the opening spell and Seymour claiming the first wicket.

VB then came on as first change and snagged the second wicket in his first over. He was joined by Al from the other end, who claimed the first of his two wickets shortly after.

The Botany captain then began to compile a half century, before being dismissed by Adrian Fromm.

After 30 overs, Botany were still struggling on 139, needing 7.7 runs per over. However, the Apaches struggled to contain some strong hitting from Botany which kept them in the game, and the crucial wicket proved elusive.

Bryan returned for his second spell of 4 overs and yielded just 7 runs for Botany. Requiring 45 runs from the last 4 overs, for a moment it appeared Botany’s challenge was fading.

However, a barrage of sixes closed the gap again. Despite some late bowling changes – including long-awaited left-arm pacers from Sujee – the Apaches were unable to shut the game down.

Requiring 6 runs from the last over, Botany took the victory with 4 balls to spare.

Nevertheless, the Apaches controlled much of the match even with a depleted bowling attack missing the likes of Pat Foley, Will Sammuri and Isaac Williams. This was a tight defeat, but there are strong signs for the season.

1st inns. – Apaches won toss and elected to bat
David Waterson – 71
Mark Horvath – 32*

2nd inns.
Bryan Seymour – 2/12 from 8 overs
Al Yap – 2/39 from 8 overs
